About Onvio

Onvio (onvio.ca) is cloud-based software for accountants and tax professionals. DT Max integrates with Onvio, allowing you to send forms and completed tax returns quickly and securely to your clients.

Preferences

Before using Onvio, please go to "Preferences > Onvio", enter your login information, and set the options as desired. See the Knowledge Base for more information.

Client operations

Add a client to Onvio

There are two ways to do this.

  1. Client List method

    1. Select a client in the Client List.
    2. Right-click the client.
    3. Select "Add this client to Onvio".
    4. Provide the "Onvio client ID". This can be anything you like but must be unique. The "Email address" is optional.

For T1 only, check the box labelled "Enable access to Onvio Client Centre" if you want the client to be able to login to Onvio. Access to Onvio Client Centre can also be enabled latter either by going to "Tools > Onvio > Enable Onvio Client Centre", or by manually enabling it in Onvio. You will need to provide an email address for the client. If the family member doesn't have an email address (e.g., a dependant), you have the option of linking to the same Onvio client linked to the family head or spouse (if applicable).

  2. Printing method

    1. Go to "Production printing".
    2. In the "Onvio" section, select "Send 'Client copy' directly to Onvio".
    3. Press the "Print" button.
    4. If this client is not an Onvio client, you will be asked if you want to create a new client.
    5. Select "Yes" to add a new client to Onvio.
Select "No" if you wish to link this client to an already existing Onvio client. To do this, the printing operation will be cancelled. Once the client is linked, you can repeat the printing operation.
    6. Provide the "Onvio client ID". This can be anything you like but must be unique. The "Email address" is optional.

For T1 only, check the box labelled "Enable access to Onvio Client Centre" if you want the client to be able to login to Onvio. Access to Onvio Client Centre can also be enabled later either by going to "Tools > Onvio > Enable Onvio Client Centre", or by manually enabling it in Onvio. You will need to provide an email address for the client. If the family member doesn't have an email address (e.g., a dependant), you have the option of linking to the same Onvio client linked to the family head or spouse (if applicable).
    7. The tax return will then be sent to Onvio.

For the T1, with either method, the client will receive a registration email if you enabled access to Onvio Client Centre.

    2. Right-click the desired client.
    3. Select "Unlink client".

Signing officers (T2 only)

Add a signing officer to Onvio

This will enable Onvio Client Centre access for the signing officer which means that the signing officer will be able to log into Onvio. The signing officer will receive a registration email.

After adding, the signing officer will be able to see any documents in the associated client's "Tax Return" folders.

Note: The client (corporation) must be added/linked to Onvio before you can add the signing officer to Onvio.

  1. Select the client in the Client List.
  2. Right-click the client.
  3. Select "Add signing officer to Onvio".
  4. Provide the "Onvio client ID" and "Email address". The "Onvio client ID" can be anything you like but must be unique.

Link a signing officer to an already existing Onvio client

The signing officer can be linked to any individual client in Onvio (i.e., you cannot link to an Onvio corporation, trust, etc.). After linking, the signing officer will be able to see any documents in the associated client's "Tax Return" folders.

Note: The client (corporation) must be added/linked to Onvio before you can link the signing officer.

  1. Select the client in the Client List.
  2. Right-click the client.
  3. Select "Link signing officer to an existing Onvio client".
Note: This option will only be available if the signing officer is not already linked to an Onvio client.
  4. In the "Link Onvio client" window, select the Onvio client to which you wish to link.
  5. Click the "Link" button.

Unlink a signing officer from an Onvio client

This is useful if you accidentally link a signing officer to the wrong Onvio client and want to undo it. After unlinking, the signing officer will no longer be able to see any documents in the associated client's "Tax Return" folders.

There are two ways to do this.

  1. Client List method

    1. Select the client in the Client List.
    2. Right-click the client.
    3. Select "Remove signing officer from Onvio client list (unlink)".
Note: This option will only be available if the signing officer is already linked to an Onvio client.

  2. Onvio client list method

    1. Open the "Onvio client list" (see details in the "General operations" section on how to do this).
    2. Right-click the desired signing officer.
    3. Select "Unlink signing officer".

General operations

Show the Onvio Client list

There are three ways to do this.

  1. Client List method

    1. Select any client in the Client List.
    2. Right-click the client.
    3. Select "Show Onvio client list".

  2. Preferences method

    1. From the menu, select "Preferences" and then "Onvio".
    2. Click on the link "View the list of registered Onvio client accounts".

  3. Tools method

    1. From the menu, select "Tools" > Onvio > Show Onvio client list".

With any method, the Onvio client list will be displayed.

Send a tax return to Onvio

See the section "Add a client to Onvio" (Part B - Printing method) for details.

If the tax return has already been previously sent to Onvio, and if you have selected the "Always ask" option in the Onvio preferences regarding duplicate documents, then you will be asked if you wish to replace the existing tax return. If you select "No", a number will be appended to the name of the document. This number will be incremented by one each time you do this.

Note: The document name includes the name of the client. This prevents the tax return of one DT Max client from replacing the tax return of another DT Max client when both DT Max clients are linked to the same Onvio client.
